The tension between flower farming and gardening
or where does being commercial blend with love of working the land for the sake of making a beautiful garden?
Flower farming and gardening are not the same thing.
Flower farming is an activity involving growing flowers for profit. The idea is that you grow something inexpensively and sell as much of it for as much money as you can and so make a profit. Flowers can be a great option for a profitable sale as each stem has a measurable value, and if you can get the flowers to market, and they are in good condition, and will last through the vicissitudes of being used by a florist for their purposes for up to a week, then right there you can make a living. The more cash you have to invest, the bigger the living you might be able to make. You can sell roses by the 100 stems wholesale for £2 each. So plant a field of roses! You can sell big hydrangea heads for more. Long, bifurcated branches of trees like beech or hornbeam can be sold for a price per foot. Good money.
