The Tesla slides silent into the entrance by the gate. Ellen and Piers are still at the kitchen table. She’s telling him what is happening with Dick London. Her fears must be unfounded, she’s telling him. Tessa and Rufus are thrilled with the income it will bring.
‘But you and I both know what these people are like,’ says Ellen. It was she who changed the subject. He had fumbled around for apology, but for what? His apology too general. He still didn’t understand what Ellen wanted. And you could see her realise this, and back off, and close up, and release him from the possibility of achieving her idea of a raprochement. They’d drunk their cider brandy. She didn’t want to know about Marina or Isabella, no matter how sorry she felt for an eight year old brought up to wear stiff pink pinafore dresses for a visit to the country. Watch her do something about that child though - she won’t be able to resist.
