How and why to save seed

and how this small business is making our cut flower crops more resilient

Winnow Farm Seeds is a business growing co-operatively with small scale flower farmers and florists in deepest south west Dorset. A symbiotic relationship between seed farmer and flower growers seems obvious when you see it in action, and proves the point I make often, that if small businesses collaborate they can achieve more both of their own core objective - in this case, to save the planet one flower at the time, AND be more useful to potential clients because they have stock and people in enough quantity to say yes. Win win.

Ellen Rignell works with Lucy and Emma of Meadowsweet Flowers and Floristry. Between them they choose varieties to sow and grow. The flower farmers leave some of each crop for Ellen to harvest for seed. The seed Ellen harvests gives the flower farmers a more resilient crop for the next year.

See this clip to find out more about how the parents of the seeds you sow make incremental changes each generation which help plants flourish in your particular environment, how to see when a flower is ready to be dried for seed harvest, how you can spot mixes being bred in your own field, and how you too can register to be a grower of seed for sale.

Enjoy!
